The Cancer Committee is devoted to the education, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The links listed below are designed to guide patients to organizations that offer information on diagnosis, treatment and support for dealing with cancer.

National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service
The National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service (CIS) has educated patients and their families, the public, and health care professionals for nearly three decades. CIS information specialists answer calls to 1-800-4-Cancer (1-800-422-6237) in English and Spanish from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.

NCI Cancer Fact Sheets
The NCI Cancer Fact Sheets are a collection of fact sheets that address a variety of cancer topics.

National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Booklet
This National Cancer Institute (NCI) booklet (NIH Publication No. 00-1566) contains important information about cancer. It describes some possible causes of cancer and mentions ways to reduce the chance of acquiring the disease. It also provides information about screening and early detection, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. Several sections of this booklet provide information to help people with cancer and their families cope with the disease.

The National Cancer Institute is a component of the National Institutes for Health and is the Federal Government’s principal agency for cancer research and training.

National Cancer Institute’s “Coping with Cancer” Page
This page addresses various side effects of cancer; including treatment options, pain, fatigue, and emotional concerns.

The American Cancer Society’s page for Patients, Family and Friends
Provides information on cancer, treatment, coping and what to expect after treatment.

American Cancer Society’s Cancer Survivors Network (Patient Forum)
An online forum that allows survivors to interact with one another.

Cancer Forums
A website for discussions about diagnosis, treatment, pain, emotional concerns for patients and friends and family of patients.

CancerCare
Cancer Care is a national non-profit organization that provides free professional support services to anyone affected by cancer: people with cancer, caregivers, children, loved ones, and the bereaved.

Health Literacy Resources
Listed below are several tools that will benefit the communication between physician and patient. Ask Me 3, an organization that provides tools to improve health literacy, has developed a brochure for physicians regarding health literacy as well as “Words To Watch” glossary of words that can be confusing for patients. The glossary provides alternative words to encourage a better understanding.

Pfizer has developed information on health literacy and we have provided a link to their Health Literacy site which contains information for physicians as well as patients.
