Electronic Submission Preferences

All advertisements must be submitted in digital format - no film is accepted. Black and white ad slicks or laser prints containing no screen tints will be accepted and scanned, but always send a digital file when possible.

Preferred file format:

Please provide 4-color and black & white ads in high-res pdf format whenever possible. Use Adobe Acrobat Distiller's "press optimized" job option for 4-color ads; use Distiller's "print optimized" job option for black-only ads. If ads are created using MS Word's "print PDF" feature be aware that color and resolution will not be optimum for printing.

Accepted file formats

We will also accept ads created using supported page layout programs (Mac platform only), although if possible always accompany native application files with a high-res pdf for printing. The following programs are accepted (be sure to include linked graphic files and fonts):

  • QuarkXPress (preferred)
  • Adobe InDesign
  • Illustrator or Freehand files are accepted, saved in EPS format. Please convert fonts to outlines if possible.
  • High-resolution TIFF, JPG or EPS files accepted (300 dpi for CMYK or greyscale).

Note: We're sorry, but if you're working on a PC platform we cannot accept page layout or Word files; pdfs, TIFFs, JPGs or EPS files only, please.

Unsupported Programs

Please do not supply ads in Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, or any other word processing format; Microsoft Publisher, CorelDraw, and PowerPoint files are also unacceptable. If your file can only be created in these formats, please create a pdf file, then convert the pdf to TIFF or JPG format. Or, you can print out a laser proof for us to scan, and send in the laser proof only.

Ad Processing

    1. Label your disk with the advertiser’s name and the issue in which the ad will appear. Also include the name and phone number of the ad designer in case there are problems with the file.
    2. Be sure to include an up-to-date page proof. Ads cannot be accepted without one.
    3. Media: CD-R is preferred.

Special Considerations

Color

Please convert all RGB or spot colors to CMYK. If your ad is printing with black and a spot color (not process color), please provide the page layout file to ensure proper color separation.

Image Resolution

300 dpi for greyscale or CMYK scans; 1270 dpi for line art (bitmap) scans.

Electronic File Submission

Please do not send email attachments any larger than 2 MBs. Larger files should be sent via an overnight courier service or uploaded to the Carter Publishing Studio ftp server (ftp.carterpublishingstudio.com). Please contact Sharon Heckel to obtain user name, password, and other details.
