President Bush has nominated James W. Holsinger, Jr., MD, Lexington, to be the Surgeon General of the US Public Health Service. A cardiologist, Dr Holsinger has served as Kentucky's Secretary for Health and Family Services and the Chancellor of the University of Kentucky Medical Center. In regards to childhood obesity, which will be his focus, Dr Holsinger was instrumental in passing state laws to take junk food out of vending machines in schools. Prior to his service in Governor Fletcher’s cabinet, Dr Holsinger had a 26-year career with the Department of Veteran Affairs. In addition, he served over 30 years in the US Army Reserve, retiring with the rank of Major General in 1992. Kentucky
