The Kentucky Department for Medicaid Services implemented physician reimbursement increases effective July 1, 2007. The increases and specific codes affected were set out in a letter to the physician provider community from Medicaid Commissioner Glenn Jennings on June 18, 2007. KMA advocated for reimbursement increases and worked with the Medicaid Department for months to ensure the increases had the greatest effect on physicians and patients by addressing the codes that account for nearly 80% of all Medicaid physician expenditures. In addition, KMA advocated for an increase in the number of Level IV and V visits that will be allowed, as well as a special payment for “after-hours care,” both of which will also be implemented. Patients seen after-hours will be paid a flat $72 rate. Medicaid defines “after-hours” as occurring after 5:01 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 12:01 p.m. Saturday through 7:59 a.m. on Monday.
