KMA Launches Tobacco Cessation Initiatives
posted 6/10/08

KMA’s Community and Rural Health Committee has worked on several tobacco prevention and cessation initiatives this year:

  1. Sponsored a seminar on health risks associated with secondhand smoke.
  2. Advanced policy to encourage all physicians to counsel patients about secondhand smoke exposure risks and to support smoking prohibition in all public places in Kentucky.
  3. In conjunction with the Kentucky Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program, developed and published in the June issue of the KMA Journal a physician toolkit providing information on counseling and referral systems, Medicare billing and coding information, current cessation medications as well as information on Kentucky’s Tobacco Quit Line.

Interested in being a Champion?

Promoting the toolkit to physicians prompted the Committee to launch its Community Health Champion program with a goal to identify a local Champion in every Kentucky county who would promote resources and information from KMA to local physicians at medical society or hospital staff meetings.  If you’re interested in being a Champion, contact KMA or complete this nomination form.
