WHAT IS THE ESTABLISH PRACTICE GRANT PROGRAM?

Since 1945, the Rural Kentucky Medical Scholarship Fund (Fund) has provided loans/scholarships to students in medical school in return for designated years of service following the completion of study. In 2003, the Fund discontinued the loan/scholarship program and now awards grants for practice startup assistance to those who agree to the full-time practice of primary care medicine in critically underserved counties of Kentucky.   Primary care medicine includes the areas of Family Practice, General Practice, Internal Medicine (excluding subspecialties), Pediatrics, Medical Pediatrics, and Obstetrics/Gynecology.

HOW DOES THE ESTABLISH PRACTICE GRANT PROGRAM WORK?

Approved grant program recipients will be eligible to receive four (4) disbursements from the program over seven (7) years of practice in a Fund-designated critical county.   The disbursements will take place after the physician's 1st , 3rd , 5th , and 7th years of practice as follows:

$20,000 after the 1st year of practice

$30,000 after the 3rd year of practice

$30,000 after the 5th year of practice

$30,000 after the 7th year of practice

Applications must be received by March 1, and will be evaluated for acceptance into the program by the Board of Directors.  Up to two new recipients will be selected each year. The recipients must serve the designated time required for each grant prior to receiving the grant distribution.

Previous recipients of loans/scholarships are eligible to apply for the grant program.  This does not alter your original agreement with the Fund.

Applicants must be a member of the Kentucky Medical Association.

Those who currently reside and/or practice in a critically underserved county are not eligible for this Grant.

WHICH COUNTIES ARE DESIGNATED AS CRITICAL COUNTIES?

The Establish Practice Grant Program Designation List of critical counties, compiled annually in December, is based on various criteria of medical underservice in the counties.  Applicants will choose from the Designation List that is current at the time of the their agreement.  There are 40 counties from which to choose a practice location.

For more information about designated critical counties, please contact the Fund office.

The 2007 RKMSF Grant Program Designation List is available for printing.

The Designation List on this page applies only to the grant Program.
